Established by the UAE’s visionary founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in 1968, Al Ain Zoo’s focus is to preserve the wildlife and ecology of the country, while sustaining natural resources. Today, the zoo is home to 4,000+ animals and is a leading hub for wildlife conservation.

About Al Ain Zoo

A Legacy Continues
Al Ain Zoo has been a cornerstone of wildlife preservation, education, and care for over five decades. Our legacy is deeply rooted in the principles of environmental stewardship instilled by our founder. His belief in the importance of conserving our natural world for future generations continues to guide our work.
The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan linked the concept of heritage to the unique relationship between the Emirati people and their land. Thus in preserving the environment, the legacy of our ancestors is preserved.

Committed to Conservation
Our conservation efforts are at the heart of everything we do. We are home to over 4,000 species of animals, many of which are endangered. Through breeding programs, habitat preservation, and partnerships with global conservation organizations, we strive to protect and increase populations of these threatened species.
Since its founding, Al Ain Zoo has been a centre for endangered species conservation, in particular the successful breeding of desert antelopes and gazelles, such as the DamaGazelle, Arabian Oryx, as well as the Arabian sand cat.

Rescue and Rehabilitation
Spread over 3,500 square meters, our Rescue Centre specialises in the care and rehabilitation of dangerous wild animals, some of which are rescued from people who cannot provide the care required. Over 200 animals including predators and primates are currently receiving 24 hour care.
In addition, our dedicated team of veterinarians and animal care specialists work tirelessly to nurse injured or orphaned animals back to health. We believe every creature deserves a chance at life, and we are proud to provide a safe haven for those we rescue.

Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre
Housed in a LEED certified building, the Learning Centre seeks to promote knowledge about the UAE’s natural ecosystem in an interactive and entertaining manner.
Visit the beautifully conceived museum and explore its five interactive galleries: the Sheikh Zayed Tribute Hall, Abu Dhabi's Desert Over Time, Abu Dhabi's Living World, People of the Desert and Looking to the Future. Each gallery uses film, images and stories to throw a spotlight on the nation’s natural history and forward-thinking initiatives.

Embracing the Future
At Al Ain Zoo, we continue to honor Sheikh Zayed's vision, creating a space where people can connect with nature, learn about biodiversity, and join us in our mission to protect and preserve wildlife. We invite you to be part of our journey towards a sustainable future for all living beings.
