One of three hyena species, the spotted hyena bears a resemblance to a dog but is more closely related to the cat family. Their distinctive mark is their sandy, yellowish-gray to brown coat covered in irregular dark spots — and the iconic “laughing” sounds they make. Far from being just scavengers, African spotted hyenas are skilled hunters with excellent hearing and night vision. Working together in female-led clans, spotted hyenas can take down large prey such as wildebeests.

Conservation
Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection and reduction of human/wildlife conflict particularly in areas where they are perceived as threats to livestock.
A group of hyenas is referred to as a cackle or clan.
In the wild, the female spotted hyena rules the clan. She’s not only dominant but also considerably larger than the male spotted hyena, an unusual trait among most mammals.
