Spotted Hyena

One of three hyena species, the spotted hyena bears a resemblance to a dog but is more closely related to the cat family. Their distinctive mark is their sandy, yellowish-gray to brown coat covered in irregular dark spots — and the iconic “laughing” sounds they make. Far from being just scavengers, African spotted hyenas are skilled hunters with excellent hearing and night vision. Working together in female-led clans, spotted hyenas can take down large prey such as wildebeests.

Dietary Requirements

As carnivores, these apex predators primarily hunt ungulates or hoofed animals such as antelope, wildebeest, and zebra, as well as carrions. Common spotted hyena behaviour also incidate that they are excellent scavengers, able to digest skin, bone and other animal remains.

Threats

Although not listed as Vulnerable or Threatened, spotted hyenas still face pressures from human persecution (often through poisoning) as well as habitat loss and competition for food with other large carnivores.

Conservation

Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection and reduction of human/wildlife conflict particularly in areas where they are perceived as threats to livestock.
